The Battle Of The Big Brand Christmas Advert (2022)๐
Let's take a look at some of the best Christmas Adverts of 2022...
This year, the hype for next-level Christmas Adverts has been huge. With the biggest household names fighting for the title of "Best Christmas Advert 2022".
With the majority being released back in November, these adverts have had quite some time to settle. I will say, they're all nothing short of incredibly emotional and heart-warming stories that highlight different perspectives, make us all reflect, and give back in the spirit of Christmas.
Brands such as John Lewis, Aldi, ASDA, and Disney have all headed down the 'traditional' story-telling path this year, which we have no doubt will be the winners for lots of you. Whereas JD Sports has decided to do something a little different. Take a look at our 'Top Five' list below, and let us know your favourite โคต
Why are JD Sports here?
We were also surprised. They've never been a brand to be on the 'Christmas videos I'm excited for' list, but they may have potentially just changed Christmas adverts forever.
For one, they've not gone traditional. They've kept their Christmas Advert relevant and targeted towards the younger generation. A clever decision, as their audience is the generation that persuades all the mums and dads out there to buy, buy, buy! Yes, parents. You're also known as "the bank of mum and dad".
This is very clever positioning, as the younger generation is right at the forefront of innovation within the video space. For them, and I write this as a 26YO, consuming yet another generic and traditional Christmas advert is one way to forget about these brands. Sure, ASDA produced a very high-production advert with a fan-favourite for many, and there is a sense of nostalgia behind the idea, but Elf was relevant back in 2003 - it's 2022...
Secondly, JD Sports has collaborated with some of the most famous influencers and icons in the media, such as KSI, Anthony Joshua, and Bugzy Malone to name a few.
This creates 'hype'. A certain buzz where the fans of these influential people are instantly hooked and want to digest every form of content the influencer is involved with. In this case, they're involved in an advert. Who would have thought people would be excited to be sold too...
Currently, this video is sitting around 25,000,000+ views worldwide, making it one of the most-viewed Christmas Adverts of the year.
What they've done well.
Every great advert is filled with a behind-the-scenes arsenal full of strategies, targets, and psychological tactics to encourage you to part ways with your hard-earned cash! Doesn't that just make you feel festive...
#1: Pacing
The pacing of any video is fundamental as if you set the correct pace, your video could yield significantly higher retention from your audience. For all of you Marketers out there, that's the golden metric that we're all after - and revenue...that's also important.
There's no denying that this advert is quick. Every second or two the shot changes to keep the pace of the video fresh, fuelling you with the dopamine high you're addicted to. In JD Sports case, the fast movements and multiple shots during every scene keep attention spans high, and leaves their viewers constantly guessing what's coming up next.
This works exceptionally well when targeting a younger audience, as they live and breathe a fast-paced world. JD Sports knew what they were doing here. Very, very clever.
#2: Colour
This may not seem important, that is until you find out that your favourite films have had months and years spent on finetuning the colour, just to make you feel stronger emotions and increase your engagement. Well, JD Sports thought of this too.
Who would have thought that a bright, vibrant, and eye-catching arcade was the best place to film a video for the younger generation? An intentional decision was made for the set design to draw younger viewers into their advert, and to keep them hooked with fun, flashing lights and saturated scenes.
They knew that bright lights and neon signs would get their audience clicking. After all, it's for the generation that sits six inches away from their screens and can't stop scrolling. Perhaps a perfect fit?
#3: Language
If you've ever posted anything, you'll know how important the language of your content is to resonate with the end consumer. You have posted something before, right?
A strong call to action is essential in converting any engaged viewer. In this case, with the end line: "Alright, this is it big man. Are you ready?". A soft sell for sure, but one that speaks the language of the end consumer, and in a tone that resonates on a personal level. Ultimately, this language gets their target audience to take action, and purchase what they have to offer.
Why is this important?
Well, if you're thinking of making a video these are three very important aspects of creating one that engages and resonates with your audience. You'd think it was as easy as turning your camera on, pressing record, and boom, you've gone viral - I'm sorry to say that it's not quite as simple as that.
Everything you create, be that a quick iPhone video, all the way through to big company adverts, evolves around who you're targeting. JD Sports knows their audience inside and out. From the influencers they watch, the athletes they aspire to be, all the way through to the language that they use. Take note here Marketers, this is such a vital step when creating your own videos that you won't want to miss it!
Who deserves the title?
Look, we're not saying that hard work and beautifully filmed videos from every other big brand have failed. In fact, far from it. They've all been incredible this year. But in our opinion, we feel that the traditional format of a Christmas video isn't hitting like it once did.
Whilst every other household name has created a beautifully crafted, traditional video, JD Sports has created a new style of Christmas Advert, and one we hope sticks around. Whilst all adverts this year (amongst the many others that we haven't shown here) are incredibly powerful and will be favourites of the masses, we just can't help but think that a refresh was needed - and that's exactly what JD Sports has given us. Therefore we feel they deserve to take home the trophy of "Best Christmas Advert 2022".
