Overcoming Video Challenges: Tips and Tricks for In-House Creators đ„

Read Time: 4 Minutes
Whether you're a small business owner, a marketer, or a creative soul, producing videos in-house can be both rewarding and challenging.
But fear not, because today Iâm going to show you how to overcome the common video production challenges that youâll be facing.
Letâs dive in!

Challenge #1: Equipment
When you don't have access to fancy video gear or a dedicated production studio, it's natural to feel a little apprehensive.
Most people will push back, and refrain from filming anything in fear that their lack of equipment will make them look unprofessional and shoddy. But, this just isnât the case.
Start with what you have. Five years ago, before starting my video production agency, I started making videos on my iPhone 6S. Five years later, Iâve reinvested in some quality equipment, but still use my iPhone from time to time.

Challenge #2: Scripting and Storytelling
Crafting a compelling script is an art form, but you don't need to be an award-winning writer to create engaging videos.
Start by identifying your key message and target audience. Keep it concise, conversational, and authentic. Your audience wants to connect with real people, so let your personality shine through.
Take your viewer through a journey of highlighting the problem, addressing the conflict, and offering the resolution.

Challenge #3: Framing
A common challenge when filming for the first time by yourself is the framing of your footage, as this can have a negative effect on the quality of your video.
Imagine dividing your frame into a 3x3 grid, and placing your subject at the intersection points. This creates a visually appealing composition.
Experiment with different angles, perspectives, and shot sizes to add variety and keep your viewers engaged.

Challenge #4: Lighting
Good lighting is crucial for creating professional-looking videos, and in my opinion, itâs the defining factor of a good-looking video.
Remember that natural light is your best friend. Try filming near windows or outside during the golden hours, and if natural light isn't available, invest in affordable lighting equipment like LED panels to start off with.
This really makes the difference between a professional and a bosh-jobbed video that wonât make viewers stop and engage. Invest some time into learning the skill of lighting. It will make all the difference!

Challenge #5: Editing
Editing is by far one of the most complicated parts of the process when it comes to creating video content, and unsurprisingly this is where many will fall short and throw in the metaphorical towel.
The trick here is to keep it simple. Donât overproduce a video that doesnât need all the bells and whistles!
Focus on creating a good structure, add some nice background music, and work with multiple angles of footage to hold your viewersâ attention. Plus, if you get stuck, every great editor once started out watching late-night YouTube tutorials on âHow to edit a video inâŠâ.

Challenge #6: Distribution
Posting it on every platform without a video strategy, or distribution plan, is the fastest way to make your creation and hard work flop. So invest time into creating a plan and tactical approach to promoting your masterpiece.
Optimise your video by working on titles, copy, descriptions, and tags. Make it searchable, instead of a âchurn-and-burnâ style of video that dies the horrible death of social media 24 hours later.

As always, these are only a few out of the hundreds of challenges that youâll be sure to come across when creating videos.
But getting started in the first place is the hardest part of the process, and as soon as you dive deep into content creation, I guarantee youâll improve over time!
