From Panic To Perfection: How To Create A World-Class Video Plan 📝

Read Time: 4 Minutes.

You’ve been tasked with the job of creating a killer script for an upcoming video that’s going to launch your business to new heights.

Jumping with excitement, you sit down at your computer, open up a Word document, and in the space of an hour you’re stuck on what to write after the title “Video Script, Version #1”.

Quickly, the realisation kicks in. You start to panic, your stress levels rise, and you end up rushing a script that is now haphazardly created.

This is how not to approach a video plan.

So, here’s how you actually plan a world-class video. Let’s dive in!

Before I release this event to the public next week, I’m hosting an in-person workshop in London on the 18th of July that only has a handful of spaces left, and you have first dibs on securing a space.

If you want to create professional, premium videos for your business without hiring an expensive agency, you’ll want to be one of only 8 people that can attend the workshop here âšĄïž

Planning a world-class video that feels fresh is a tough challenge, and requires a lot of technical know-how. Although, it doesn’t look like it does on the surface

In this newsletter, I’ve handpicked five pieces of advice for getting started, in hopes that it challenges your thinking and enables you to plan a video that takes your business to new heights:

#1: Nail Your Concept

A video without a solid concept is like a ship without a rudder.

Before you dive into the exciting world of video production, take a moment to brainstorm and outline your vision. What message do you want to convey? Who are you targeting? What’s the overarching goal and purpose of your video? By answering these questions, you'll lay the foundation for a strong plan that acts as the backbone of your video that keeps everything held together.

#2: Evoke Emotion

Most videos on the internet are dry, dull, and expected.

Don’t follow this pattern, and instead introduce emotional aspects to your video that will leave your viewers hooked to their screens. Start by asking yourself the question “How do I want to make my viewer feel?”. Whether it’s inspired, excited, angry, or upset, lean into this emotion throughout the plan for your video. Be that the script, storyboard, music, or visual elements - keep them emotive!

#3: Be Realistic

You’ve got visions of explosions, jumping out of a helicopter blindfolded, and an Apple-styled office to show off your incredibly powerful team. But is that realistic?

Address budgets and timelines of your video before beginning the planning stages, as this will help to set expectations of what is feasible and achievable within the constraints you’ve been given. Whilst you dream of creating a movie-like video, these have multimillion-pound budgets, and you’re probably working with anywhere from £0-£10,000.

#4: Trim The Fat

“Trim the fat” as the saying goes, means to cut what isn’t essential and shave some weight off of your plan.

There’s a lot to say in just one video, and you’ve probably tried to fit everything in all at once. Being unemotional with what you keep and cut couldn’t be more important when you’ve come to a point of having a finished script or video structure, as more often than not, around 20-30% can be cut, and leaves your video still making sense. This helps to deliver information faster to the consumer in a much more tailor-made and condensed way.

#5: Say It Out Loud

So, your video plan is completed and you’re ready to get freelancers or agencies booked, locations scouted, and the production process started.

Well, not quite. As a final check, loud read your plan and script with key people involved to gauge the delivery of lines and receive overall feedback around the pacing, structure, and whether or not your video achieves both its purpose and talks directly to the audience you’re targeting. If it doesn’t, go back a step and trim the fat. Cut elements that don’t make sense, reword sections to connect more to your consumer, and make sure your concept is nailed.

Creating a plan for a killer video is no small feat, and comes with many more challenges than just these five listed above. After all, I’ve just scratched the surface!

But by having both a process and tactical approach to your video plan, you’ll already be ahead of most of your competitors that are painstakingly trying to plan their video for the first time, and making basic mistakes.

The next thing to do is to get started on the first draft đŸ’đŸŒâ€â™€ïž
